Good Artists Gone Bad

Posted on: February 25, 2008 9:11 pm

This is kind of a companion blog to "Bricks jukebox from hell."  It's always disappointing when an artist you enjoy puts outy a lame product.  Here are a few of my disappointments...

"Lawyers in Love" - Jackson Brown

"Tears in  Heaven" - Eric Clapton

"Angel" - Aerosmith

"Come Dancing" - The Kinks

Lame product? I presume that you mean that you purchased those four products, and felt that you got poor value in return. I don't care speak to Lawyers in Love or Angel.

As for Tears in Heaven, I think it was a tremendous achievement for Eric to write down those lyrics when he did, and stupendous that he could ever perform the music. I can scarcely believe the toll it must have cost him. If you are implying that he was trying to commercialize on that tragedy, you and I have a serious problem. I have very strong personal reasons for empathizing with Eric here. If the argument is that the song is maudlin, it is illogical, just as arguing that someone being stalked my a murderer is being paranoid. If you refer to the version on Unplugged, I would say that Lonely Stranger, by itself, is worth 10 times the cost of the CD.

Turning to Come Dancing, your blog entry is very cryptic, so I cannot tell if you refer to the track or the entire CD. The track is not one the the Kinks strongest efforts. They have always leaned toward music that offers hope for some commercial popularity, and some fun for elements of their audience. I don't know any who believe that the Kinks are profound (least of all Ray). I think the CD is what it is: It is a slice of the Kinks, no doubt aimed at an audience who has no intention whatever of buying their catalog, but who enjoy the occasional song. The versions of Living on a Thin Line and Destroyer are really quite good. I do not prefer the live versions of Lola, You Really Got Me or Celluloid Heroes. Overall I rate the CD as quite acceptable, certainly not lame.

My opinions, pure and simple mjollnir.

I know I'll probably catch flack for this one but ZZ Top Eliminator to me stands out as one. A lot of  Aerosmith's recent efforts also.

Another one would be Neil Young. Some of his stuff is, of course, great. But then there's Trans. What the hell was that?

As much as I love Pink Floyd, The Final Cut sucked.

JD, I was referring to songs, not the entire albums.  While I like the sentiment of "Tears in Heaven", I do not think it is a good song and the fact that it was written due to a tragic accident probably compounded its overexposure on the radio.

As far as The Kinks are concerned, they are not a band that I look to for profound lyrics in any way.  Again, this is a song that I don't believe lives up to their usual standard, a throwaway, so to speak.

As you said, these are only my opinions, no more or less valid than anyone elses.

About mjollnir's music mayhem
As is alluded to in the title, this is a blog about music(or not, depending on my mood), and as my musical tastes run the gamut, there may be mayhem at times. I hope that those who choose to read my blog don't pass out from boredom and hit their head on their monitor and get a concussion...
